TAMANAWAS FALLS

Tamanawas Falls is a pleasant 3.6-mile round trip hike located near the base of Mount Hood. The trail follows along a stream through the forest to the large opening in which Tamanawas Falls is located. The trail stops near the bottom of the waterfall. However, if you are up to it, you can scramble over a sloping field of rocks all the way to the amphitheater behind the falls.

This trail was packed when I hiked it over the 4th of July weekend. Because I'd hiked Ramona Falls that morning, I didn't arrive at the trailhead until late in the afternoon. I remember frequently getting caught behind large groups of people along trail, but I was probably hiking it during the busiest time of the year. This is a trail you will want to hike in the off-season, or on a weekday to fully appreciate. Because it is located at a fairly high elevation near the base of Mount Hood, it is likely inaccessible during much of the winter.
